Getting Over The Past!
April 28th, 2008 | by |It’s time to move on!
There are, or I should say, there have been some great headphones, that deserve classic status. Headphones like the Koss Porta pro, The Sennheiser PX100 and PX200 or the Sennheiser twins, as I like to call them. Others like the Sony MDR-V700 DJ headphones (you know what’s coming don’t you?) and the still very popular Sennheiser CX300 earphones.
Now, there is nothing wrong with these headphones, nothing at all…for the most part. They are popular and to be honest, I can hear why. However, that this is a big however, time rarely stands still, and good though many of the headphone classics are, I think it’s time to move on.
Don’t you hear alarm bells?
The CX300’s are a good pair of headphones, with a good name behind them. You can still find the odd merchant who has a genuine pair. But with the Internet Flooded with counterfeit models, all going for sixpence, you would have thought your average buyer, would have caught on. I mean a pair of sub $89.95 headphones, now going for $7.00, you would have thought that alarm bells would be going of in their heads. But no, they hand over their cash, and then go screaming on the forums asking if they’re counterfeit. What? For $7.00, what think mate!
There are deals, and then there are deals which should set off alarm bells in your head. So there are people out there, that think there’s nothing wrong with a pair of $149.99 Sony MDR-V700 headphones going for as low as $13.99
Meet me half way
On the very rare occasion, there will be some headphones that go below half the retail price. However, when you see a pair of $149 headphones going for $17, you should run a mile. I’m going to jump the gun and say: that includes the Bose Triport IE earphones on amazon.co.uk
But what are we talking about really? Alternatives. It’s time to get over such headphones. Find something other than the Bose Triport IE, not only because I thought they were rubbish, but because there is… yes there is something else out there, that’s more deserving of your money.
The thing is, that with the internet, the choice for us is only limited by
1) Your knowledge of what’s out there.
2) What’s on the market today.
Unlike the time when I had to buy a pair of Sennheiser PX30’s (brilliant little headphones) because in my town there was nothing else available (pre Internet). I had to start on Technics headphones that kept on breaking all the time. When I bought my first pair of Sennheiser’s, I thought they were the be all and end all of headphones. Now I know that isn’t the case, and with such suspiciously cheap CX300’s going for next to nothing, you should know to.
So, suggestions for replacement CX300’s? To be quite honest, at the low price that most buy the fake things for, there’s not much genuine stuff you could buy. It’s a matter of upping the money a bit. My choice would be a quick trip to amazon.com (if I lived in the States) to buy a pair of Ultimate Ears Metro.fi 2 earphones. $46.30 with the ‘free with super saver shipping’ option.
The Metro.fi suggestion would also cover all those fake Bose headphones as well. Come to think of it, I’d rather have the Metro’s over the Bose anyway, and that’s coming form a Bose Triport AE and Triport OE owner and fan.
DJ headphones alternative?
Get hold of a very genuine pair of Equation Audio RP21. It’s that simple. I never thought the Sony MDR-V700 DJ headphones were much cop at the best of times, so why people would be lining up to buy a fake pair, I have no idea. My suggestion is the Equation Audio RP21. Brilliant, and as far as I know, Fake free. And they’re more of a copper color, rather than an orangey color by the way.
Sennheiser PX100

Unless you’re buying from certain countries, I’ve not come across a great abundance of fake PX100’s. Either that or people don’t realize they are fake. But there is an alternative in the form of the Grado iGrado’s, which I have to add are far more capable than the PX100’s in almost every area. Or if you are lucky enough, you can get bidding on a pair of Grado SR60’s.
Sennheiser PX200

There is an alternative to the mighty Sennheiser PX200’s. The JBL Reference 410 headphones are a good and far more powerful alternative. With a (sometimes) handy inline volume control and the ability to fold, just like it’s Sennheiser counterpart, the JBL’s are able to kick the PX200 off, what was, the top spot. I would hasten to Add that the JBL’s are AKG K27i’s in drag, and so they are a good, but unknown alternative to the baby AKG’s range.
I could go on, but to be quite honest I’ve covered the main offenders. Headphones that are still good, but headphones we need to be getting over, headphones that are a bit long in the tooth. Worst of all, in some cases, headphones that have a questionable reputation of being fake.
