I'm feeling a bit sheepish about this. I saw a very well known electronics store selling the Sennheiser HD 238 headphones for a very low price. I then realized that the store in question had obviously marked them at the wrong price. Should I email them or grab them while I could Huh Huh Well, I took advantage of the situation. I do feel a bit bad Undecided

So how do they sound?

O.K. actually. I read a review recently that wasn't too complimentary, so I was ready to be disappointed. The sound is crisp, the bass is crisp, the highs are crisp, it's all crisp. However putting them against the Ultrasone HFI-15G and the c-jays, it's not a clear win situation. Although not entirely unwelcome, the Senns are a tad bright. The Ultrasone's are more grounded, more realistic in their presentation. I thought the c-jays might have their work cut out, but again, the c-jays are far more grounded as well.

Listening to the Prodigy - Invaders must die, non of them do too badly, however I'm leaning away from the Sennheiser's although the bass is very...crisp, I feel more involved with the other two. However the HD 238 headphones have had less than a hours burn in, and to be honest, the c-jays have only gotten better over the few months I've had them.

There's no clear winner here Tongue

I thought the Sennheiser's would destroy the Ultrasone's and c-jays, but they all have a downside to them. The small ear pads on the c-jays could be more cosseting, the Ultrasone's need a bit of a kick up the backside to get any volume out of them, and the Sennheiser's don't feel like the sturdiest headphones on the market!

The Sennheiser's jack is ridiculously big, the Ultrasone's cable is thicker than a babies arm, and is longer than the Lord of The Rings trilogy, and the c-jays cable arrangement might not suit all, even though it's a good protection against snagging.

As I said before, the Senn's plastics aren't of the best quality, the Ultrasone's shack rattle and roll with the best of them, however in this company the c-jays simple design wins. The c-jays have a far better quality feel to them.

Conclusion?

Like I said there's no clear winner, but the Sennheiser HD238's are a welcome addition to the high(ish) end portable headphone market! If I had to choose then the c-jays would inch ahead. They are tiny, and the sound is fuller than the Senn's. But non of them do badly.

Angry >:(Update Angry Angry

Well, the HD 238 headphones are well burned in by now, and I have to say that they're not bad, but there's a 'but'. if you crank up the volume, or raise the bass level on your equalizer, then the Senn's will spit back. You can hear the driver membranes crackling... it's not good. Keep at at reasonable level, then like the rest of the frequencies, the Sennheiser's will stay sweet and crisp.

Any comment on how they would be compared to the ATH-ES7?

Hands up, i've never tried the ES7's before. some say the ES7's have quite a weighty sound. I'm sorry, but the HD238's just don't cut it with beat driven music. The diaphragms wave a white flag, in the form of crackling sound when you try deep bass at even reasonable levels. They are good though, but you'll need the right music.
