Fake Creative EP630 Review

On January 29, 2009, in Creative EP 630, ebay, Guide, Review, by matt

Time to find out if your Creative EP630 earphones are fake.

Please remember that this isn’t the last word in displaying fake Creative EP630. You should understand that there are many people marketing fakes, but only one company creating the real thing. Use the genuine Creative EP630 as a guide. The fake EP630 earphones are there to highlight the genuine EP630 attributes, and not to be taken as a definitive example of all fake EP630′s.

Easy to spot differences

  • The genuine EP630 cords are the same length
  • The Creative packaging is orange and complicated to get into (as are all Creative headphones)

Detailed differences

  • The genuine ear buds have a mat finish
  • The genuine silver driver cover is smooth and rounded, the fake has a 45% angle
  • The genuine grill is silver and is almost flush mounted, the fake grills have a dull finish and are recessed
  • The genuine ear bud lip is angled, the fake ear bud lip is squared off

Sound

The fakes sound uneven. The right hand driver on my pair are faulty. if you give them a quick push further into your ears, you’ll hear a ‘scrunching’ sound, they’re cheap alright! The bass is good, the midrange is distant, and the whole sound fells hollow.

The genuine sounds far clearer and more detailed. the sound is quite fast, not slow and boomy like the fake. With the click push test, there’s no crackling or scrunching noise. These are the real thing, although they’re not enough to tempt me away from my Soundwise T4′s!

1) Like you need me to tell you which ones are fake!

2) Large ear buds have a mat finish

3) Small ear buds on the genuine pair are bigger than the fake pair, they have a mat finish (click to enlarge this picture, the differences are obvious)

4) Silver driver cover & grill. The fakes grill is recessed and you can also see traces of glue. The grill on the fake example is also dark, compared to the silver grill of the genuine EP630. The fake silver driver case also has an edge to it. The genuine driver case has a smooth rounded edge.

5) Ear bud lip on the fake (left) is square. The ear bud lip on the genuine pair has an angled edge. you can also see the rounded edge of the silver driver case better here (right).

6) Genuine EP630 cables are the same length on both sides, unlike the fakes, that have a CX300 style under the chin cable.

Fortunately Creative have their own online store, so you can buy the EP630′s straight from Creative. My advice would be the same, buy only from Amazon, and not from one of the 3rd party marketers. And if you don’t want to take that advice, then my last word would be; Let the price be your guide. Don’t buy a pair of sub $40 earphones for $14.99 and then ask if they’re fake.

Dude, tell me which one is fake in the first pic.

I thought i’d responded to this already, Just to let you know that the fake pair are in the plastic pouch.

  3. Dilla says:

Nice guide, ive just bought a pair. I got them via Play.com’s ‘Playtrade’ service which is similar to Amazon’s marketplace.
Basically im pretty dissapointed by them, ive checked them over and they have all the traits of a genuine pair apart from the left silver driver cover has a line like a fake one, the right one is genuine though :S
They sound is pretty poor out of the left , it sounds like a cheap speaker where as the right is better quality and has more low freq.
They have real packaging but with a Japanese and Korean warranty. Im really confused if they are real and supposed to be like this or fake?

Btw ive owned CX300′s before and they are alot better. But build quality is exactly the same and they broke easily.

Just got some fake ones from AUDIOINTIME from playtrade. Don’t touch these cow boys with a barge pole!! Always order from amazon! Not market place or playtrade!

  8. Peter says:

Really wish I’d googled your site before I bought a pair of EP-630′s from playtrade at play.com. Should have known that £10.99 plus free P&P was too good to be true. The packaging was as shown in your photo, a grey plastic bag, and all other details were there, recessed grills, asymmetric cords, square edged ear bud lips, didn’t even have the right number of ear buds (was missing one of the larger ones!). Sigh.

FYI. The seller’s name was “Electroniks” and as mentioned they are a play.com playtrade seller (amazingly, with 100% positive feedback so far!)

  9. Peter says:

Just as a follow up to my previous comment, the playtrade seller “Electroniks” refunded my purchase straight away when I complained about the counterfeit earphones, saying:

“I am very sorry to hear that you are not happy with the item, i have refunded you the whole amount. Please send the item back as i need to take this issue up with the supplier, as few similiar complains of the same nature have come through.
I apologise again for any inconveniece caused.”

Make of that what you will.

  10. Rozario says:

Theres a striking resemblance between the EP 630 and the Sennheiser CX 300. Is it the case where the manufacturer source is same for both the companies?

  11. Daniel says:

Darn, they make pretty convincing fakes now, appearance wise. Unfortunately, I fell for the $15 price tag before I found your review.

The plastic pouch, the small buds, and the dark silver grill were dead giveaways, but everything else looks very real. The quick push test truly confirmed how fake the product was. “Scrunch scrunch”

The sound is nothing impressive, and I can hear it everytime when the cord hits something. Even the cheap Phillips SHE9800 (which I lost) sounds better than this. The fake is pretty good at isolating, though.

Again, thanks for the review. I scored a free, even if fake, headphone.

  12. Tranzaction says:

I also bought a pair of these Fakes from a seller on Ebay in Australia. Unfortunately i didnt realise until i had bought them.

Still, for a pair of $18 (AU) pair of headphones, they dont hold a candle to some of the higher end headphones, but after plopping them in my ears, and playing them off against the Apple phones from the iTouch, i prefer the fakes. Definetly a little hollow, a little muddy, but they dont scream in my ear as much as the Apples. Dont buy them though, get a refund or save the money for a better pair.

  13. AndyB says:

If you have access to a multimeter measure the impedance (ohms scale). Creative state 16 ohms in their specification. My fakes are around 26 and in fact left and right aren’t equal. I think most cheap headphones are 32 ohms like the ones with my iPod whereas the high end stuff tends to be 16.
This is a pretty definitive test – if they don’t match the spec they are either fake or faulty.
Same is true for Sennheiser CX300/500 – should be 16.

  14. Mdufour says:

I bought from ebay a supposed genuine Creative ep-630 in an orange box exactly like in the first pic. IT’s FAKE FAKE FAKE!
The real original box is like on that link: http://www.themp3outletstore.com.au/catalog/images/gallery_ep630_box_m.jpg

Thnx. I was just abt 2 buy 1 EP 630. gud thing ur website showed up on google when i searched for Creative headphones

  18. E Jackson says:

Is there any difference between the EP-630 Dell ships and the EP-630 Creative ships? I ask because Dell sells the EP-630 for $10.99.

  19. matt says:

I’ll say; No, there shouldn’t be any difference. In the comparison test i did, i think i got my Creative’s for about £6-7 (form amazon.co.uk), which is about $10. I should hope that Dell are fairly trustworthy.

  20. Ivor says:

I got a pair of genuine EP-630s from a Goodwill thrift store for $2. They were much better than any of the 5 sets of $10 to $25 headphones I’d bought at WalMart over the past year. I was very happy with them. My cat chewed through the cord when I’d had them for only 3 days. I bought a replacement set on eBay which turned out to be fake. I paid $6 (which included shipping from Hong Kong). They sounded pretty OK but one side died after 5 days. Cheap cord wire, I guess.

  21. matt says:

So you got a genuine pair for $2 and later a fake pair for $6? That’s terrible! I always liked the Ep630′s though.

  22. Shaun says:

I just bought these headphones they came in a plastic pouch a bit different to the one in the first pic. I have looked at how to spot the difference between the fake and real and THEY ARE REAL.

  24. john says:

discount electronics has some real ones for sale real cheap, $9 a pair, i bought 11 pair for about 110 bucks shipped for work, got them in and they are real, they are however in the dell packaging(dell used to include these with every xps laptop, thats how i got my first pair) so yah, 100% real if you are looking for a pair this is the place to go.

  25. matt says:

I got my Genuine 630′s for a very low price, but from amazon.co.uk ….. who sold me fke CX300 II earphones!!! The only problem is that some sellers, use pictures from various sources to sell fake gear. it’s a hard one to call.

  26. Aravind says:

Can i buy genuine 630s from ebay?

  27. matt says:

I’m sure they’ll be someone selling them, but with the now low price of the genuine thing, it’ll be hard to distinguish the difference on price alone.

  28. [...] check if your ep-630 are original? Check out this link: fakeheadphones.com Fake Creative EP630 Review __________________ [...]

  29. m80116 says:

I got the faked one on eBay.

I was a little bit worried they might not be original considering I was paying much less for them.

My pair has even cord, many aspects of the fake product you describe (including enveolpe packaging but with more original-style sticker on it).

The thing that most of all made me acknowledge them as fake is the company branding (that kind of “A”) which is bigger in the fake, unlike original which has that mark smaller in every copy I’ve seen.

  30. matt says:

How d’you know they’re fake? I’m not saying you’re wrong … if amazon can sell fakes, then i’m sure dell can! What I’m saying is have you had personal experience?

  31. rpn says:

it looks fake. what’s with the green dots. it don’t look like mine which sound great, i got from newegg for $16.99 free shipping.

    my wife now uses it.

so i was looking to get another one. i found it labeled from Dell and the pic just looks fishy and the price is only $10.99, shipping was $7.99, then tax, came close to $20.

I ordered it anyway because some other website said it is a rebranded creative ep-630, which now is labeled Dell. I think they sell them along with Dell Systems as a bundle or option.

if anyone orders it, be knowned that they don’t have in stock, it’s been 4 days since i ordered it and hasn’t shipped. The estimated shipping was July 16, but did not ship. The estimated delivery is July 26.

Quite a long wait, the stupid thing is Dell says usually ships in 24 hours. So don’t believe that for any other product on Dell.

  32. Dawn says:

Good Website! I have two EP 630′s. When i went to buy the second one they gave me a fake EP 630 which was fake i even tested it with my Apple 3G Nano i-pod. I asked them for replacement then and there.
Check this before you buy one,

1.EP630 usally comes with white colour. And also black now a days.
2.# The genuine silver driver cover is smooth and rounded, the fake has a 45% angle
    # The genuine grill is silver and is almost flush mounted, the fake grills have a dull finish and are recessed
    # The genuine ear bud lip is angled, the fake ear bud lip is squared off
(as given in the web site)

  33. joeyk says:

just bought some pink ones on amazon market place from AVIDES (Germany), look real to me, only variation being the packaging… looks different, but kosher (it’s a nightmare to get into like all creative gear!!)

  34. Paul says:

I just bought a fake pair of CX300′s in an ECO box from the PlayTrade seller AUDIOINTIME.
They look very convincing apart from they sound rubbish. The spelling mistakes on the packaging alerted me and after a bit of searching found this site. Wish I’d found it sooner.
I’ve sent them back asking for a refund.
I’ve also alerted Play about this. Wonder if they’ll do anything?

  35. matt says:

So there are fake Sennheiser CX300 Eco’s on the market!

  36. matt says:

AVIDES have a huge reputation, I hope they’re the real deal … they should be!

  37. Ryan says:

    Hi,
ive had 2 pairs of the supposed fake earphones now, never had a single problem with the drivers failing on one side, there both the same loudness. and everything, so your theory of the different sound out of each earphone is rubbish.

  38. matt says:

First of all it’s not a ‘theory’ its my ‘experience’ … there’s a difference! And these are not the only headphones i’ve had problems with. Jezwins’ v-moda’s gave way after a few weeks.

    http://headphonedeals.org/2007/10/03/jezwins-v-moda-vibes-have-given-up-the-ghost/

and my Goldring GX-200′s had the same issue ..

    http://headphonedeals.org/category/goldring/

Next time you want to shoot your mouth off to me, make sure you know what the heck you’re gibbering on about or have some evidence to back up what you say.

As for you Ryan all i can say is “goodnight nurse.”

  39. Leon says:

I purchase a pair of Sennheiser headphones thorough these cowboys over two weeks ago. Nothing has arrived and they’ve not responded to the two emails I’ve sent them requested an update. I’d avoid like the plague even if the headphones do turn up now.

I too purchased from the above playtrade trader – went to creatives website to register them and the serial number is not valid! Also the serial number does not match with the warranty paperwork inside the box!! Emailed seller and I await a reply with why I cant register and whats with the two different serial numbers!! They look the genuine and sound OK :-(

  41. matt says:

ON the face of it, no! I assume these EP630′s are old stock that someone wants to get rid of. However, as you can see my counterfeit EP630 came in a ‘Sealed bag’, not a nice presentation box.

I’m not sure if all counterfeit Creative EP630 earphones are packaged as poorley as my pair were.

One of the bids has ended at £4.15 with £1 shipping, which isn’t bad…. if indedd they’re real. I personally would cough up just a little bit more money, and buy this white pair from amazon for £11.76

I just purchased a pair of EP 630s from an Amazon retailer in the UK.

They even came in what looked like legitimate packaging but on closer inspection they have all the hallmarks of fakes.

The first sign is that it’s almost impossible to put different sized ear buds on. The warranty document contained in the packaging wasn’t in English (mainly Chinese), was a bad photocopy and didn’t give any EU or UK warranty details.

The left bud makes a terribly squelching sound when pressed into the ear and the cord is offset rather than each side being of equal length.

Very difficult to tell fakes from real ones at first glance so this site is invaluable. Thanks!

just bought a set of fakes from “iGet it FAST” on amazon.com. my original set came with my dell laptop, and i lost them. really wanted a new pair, and i could tell within seconds they weren’t original. googled it and found this website. don’t buy from that guy. awesome site btw.

  46. Whingeingpom says:

    ***************PLEASE NOTE*********************

The photo with the fakes in the plastic pouch on the right next to genuine EP630s in the packaging:

I purchased a pair from an Amazon retailer which arrived in what looked like original packaging but the phones themselves were fakes. The packaging was the same as in the photo on the left, but looked like a colour photocopy – the wording on the packaging lacked definition. The warranty document inside was clearly a photocopied document and wasn’t in English at all. The phones themselves bore all the the indicators of fakes. Can’t always tell by the packaging!

  47. Psycho666 says:

I bought my own FAKE EP 630 today. What can i tell you… This headphones is sucks! But this is the best chineese FAKE sound i’ve ever heard.
